California is proving that combating climate change and robust economic growth can go hand in hand. The Castle Wind offshore wind project will produce clean energy and serve as an economic engine on California’s Central Coast for decades.
Building California’s Clean Energy Future
California has established an ambitious target of 100 percent of retail electricity supply to be produced by zero-carbon resources by 2045. To reach that target in a little over two decades, communities must turn to innovative technologies that reduce our carbon footprint while strengthening our economy now and into the future.
Offshore wind is uniquely positioned to be an important part of California’s energy mix, complementing other means of generating electricity on a carbon free grid. Recognizing this, last year Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 525, which jumpstarts California’s planning process for developing offshore wind.
Local Investment, Local Jobs
When paired with onshore infrastructure development, offshore wind will generate a significant economic benefit to the Central Coast, creating long-term sustainable, living wage jobs.
A study by California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo found that a 3 Gigawatts of offshore wind off Morro Bay will bring an average of 650 annual offshore wind jobs that pay an average annual wage of $89,000 a year.
The same study found that the economic impact of the project could reach $260 million, with a direct benefit to San Luis Obispo County of approximately $21 million.

Addressing The Climate Crisis
California’s ambitious decarbonization strategies require offshore wind infrastructure to produce clean, renewable power for generations to come.
This approach will position the state to address the worsening impacts of the climate crisis while significantly reducing air pollution, improving health outcomes, and saving Californian’s billions of dollars in the process.
